Moving in.
Moving into a new home is truly one of life’s great milestones; an event you will look back on years from now with fond memories.
But it can also be a bit of a headache if you don’t follow a few simple steps both before and during the big day.
Before your move
- Notify your financial institutions of your new address and the date it will become effective. Don’t forget to call:
- credit card companies
- insurance companies
- banks
- car loan/leasing providers
- Transfer your children’s school records to their new schools.
- Contact your utility providers to schedule appointments to terminate, transfer or begin new services.
- Ensure your mail is forwarded properly by completing a change of address form at your current post office.
- Cancel newspaper delivery and trash pickup at your old address.
- Pack a “travel” case with several days worth of clothing and toiletries. It amazing how difficult it can be finding a change of clothes amid scores of boxes.
During your move
- Stay with the movers all day to ensure items are handled to your satisfaction.
- Carry important valuables or irreplaceable items with you.
- Take a tour of your old home before the movers leave to make sure nothing has been left behind.
- Take lots of pictures, both at your old address and your new one. These will become favorite heirlooms and make fun gifts for family and friends
